History of the St. Clement Parish Community

St. Clement Parish, located in historic Lakewood, Ohio, just north of I-90 West, was established by Bishop Joseph Schrembs on April 22, 1922, to help meet the needs of Lakewood’s growing Catholic population. Father Joseph J. Schmit, the first pastor, purchased the present property on Madison Avenue between Lincoln and Marlowe Avenues. Groundbreaking for a permanent church took place on August 17, 1922, and the parish celebrated its first mass in the new church the following April.

In September of 1924, St. Clement School opened its doors to 350 students under the direction of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Three years later the parish added eight classrooms and a gymnasium to accomodate the increasing number of students. In 1947, the convent was built for 18 Sisters of St. Joseph and in 1958, six more classrooms were added onto the school.

After many successful years of providing quality Catholic education to its children, St. Clement School merged with the schools of St. Luke and St. James parishes in August of 2005 to become Lakewood Catholic Academy.

St. Clement continues the tradition of offering many and varied opportunities for spiritual growth and social interaction under the leadership of Rev. Alfred H. Winters, who has been pastor since 1986.

We welcome your support, energy and talents. Come experience the true meaning of sharing in our community of the Spirit as we strive to live the Gospel message and to bring Christ to our world. We invite you to join us for worship in a church that is warm and welcoming.
